Thousands of vyshyvanka-wearers filled the wooden church. Priest Ivan Rybaruk reported 16 local war dead, 500 kilometers west of the front lines, during the celebrations.

Many Ukrainians associate Christmas with strength and togetherness. “Historical fairness,” argues 44-year-old Yevhen Konyk. Our colonial history must be overcome, and global and national standards must be preserved. Party violence abounded. 27-year-old Olha Mynykh stated, “People are sad.” God’s light in their hearts makes Christmas happy for everybody. Event material was altered.
