A life-changing initiative, the Uplift Harris program, is set to roll out early next year, promising a guaranteed basic income with $500 monthly payments. The program, backed by $20.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act, plans to offer support to 1,928 low-income households in Harris County, Texas, aiming to enhance financial stability as well as health outcomes. Judge Lina Hidalgo, expressing the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by hardworking families, emphasized the pivotal role this initiative plays in preventing financial instability.
To qualify for the program, residents should be 18 or older with an income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Moreover, they must reside in one of 10 designated ZIP codes with the lowest income levels in the county.
The program offers flexibility by providing payments through bank transfers or a prepaid debit card, ensuring accessibility to individuals without bank accounts. Notably, the funds are tax-exempt and come with no restrictions, allowing recipients to utilize them according to their needs without affecting any existing public benefits.
