Gov. Lamont’s Initiative Aims to Make Energy More Affordable for Low-Income Residents

Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut has taken a big step to lessen the financial strain that low-income citizens face from energy bills. Governor Lamont designated $10.7 million from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in an order released on Tuesday. This will support the state’s energy efficiency initiatives and enable lower energy costs through rebates.

Emphasizing the importance of enhancing energy affordability in Connecticut, the allocated ARPA funds are set to target energy efficiency upgrades in the homes of income-eligible customers, particularly focusing on multifamily projects. Of the total amount, $7 million will be sourced from the ARPA federal program, while $3.7 million will come from the RGGI.

Governor Lamont highlighted the innovative use of ARPA funds for this purpose, aligning with the core objectives of the federal program and reaping additional workforce, climate, and air quality benefits.

Speaking on the matter, Gov. Lamont stressed the critical need for creative solutions and acknowledged the efficacy of energy efficiency programs supported by RGGI funds. With this groundbreaking project, the state is demonstrating its commitment to tackling the energy issues low-income areas face and working toward a more sustainable and just future for all citizens. Governor Lamont has made real progress toward energy affordability and alleviation possible with the allocated monies, guaranteeing that low-income people will experience lower energy costs and better living conditions.
