Major Winter Storm Warning Issued—Blizzard Conditions to Hit Oregon’s Cascades

Major Winter Storm Warning Issued—Blizzard Conditions to Hit Oregon’s Cascades

A powerful winter storm is moving into the Oregon Cascades, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions through Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, warning that some areas could see up to 15 inches of snowfall in higher elevations. Strong gusty winds will make things even worse, creating near-whiteout conditions in some spots.

If you’re planning to travel through the mountains, think again—roads are expected to become extremely dangerous, especially in areas like Santiam Pass, Government Camp, and major highways including 26 and 20. Officials are urging drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, as conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly.

How Bad Will This Storm Get?

  • Snow Accumulation: The heaviest snow will fall in areas above 3,000 feet, where totals could reach 8 to 15 inches by Thursday.
  • Winds: Strong gusts will create blowing and drifting snow, which will reduce visibility and make roads even more hazardous.
  • Icy Roads: As temperatures drop, expect slick and icy conditions, especially on mountain roads and bridges.

Why Travel Will Be Extremely Dangerous

When you mix heavy snow with strong winds, you get a recipe for disaster on the roads. Visibility can drop to near zero in whiteout conditions, making it impossible to see ahead. In mountain passes, this means you could unexpectedly drive into deep snow, black ice, or even stalled vehicles blocking the road.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is working around the clock to clear the highways, but with snow falling fast and strong winds blowing it right back onto the roads, even plowed routes will remain treacherous.

How to Stay Safe in This Storm

1. Avoid Travel If Possible

If you don’t absolutely have to drive, stay home. The risk of getting stuck, sliding off the road, or getting stranded in freezing conditions is simply too high.

2. If You Must Travel, Be Fully Prepared

For those who must drive, be ready for the worst. Here’s what you need in your car:

  • Snow chains or traction tires (they may be required in certain areas)
  • Plenty of food and water in case of delays
  • A flashlight, batteries, and a portable charger for your phone
  • Blankets and warm clothing in case you get stuck
  • A full tank of gas so you don’t risk running out

3. Check Weather and Road Updates Constantly

This storm is changing fast, and conditions can go from bad to worse in a matter of hours. Check updates from ODOT, local weather reports, and emergency alerts before heading out. If conditions look worse than expected, change your plans—it’s not worth the risk.

ODOT Crews Are Working Hard, But the Roads Will Still Be Dangerous

ODOT has snowplows, sanding trucks, and crews working non-stop, but Mother Nature is in control here. Snow will keep falling, and wind will keep blowing it right back onto the roads. Even well-plowed highways could still be covered in ice and snow within minutes.

If you’re planning to travel through mountain passes, expect long delays, road closures, and extreme winter driving conditions. Officials strongly recommend avoiding nighttime travel, when temperatures will drop even further and roads will become even icier.

Final Warning: If You Can Stay Home, Do It

This isn’t just another winter storm—it’s a serious, life-threatening situation in some areas. With up to 15 inches of snow, dangerous winds, and icy roads, driving could become nearly impossible in some spots.
