Columbia’s Midweek Washout: Why You Should Prepare for Rain and a Temperature Drop

A significant weather change is on the way for Columbia, South Carolina, with rain arriving midweek before a stretch of sunny and warmer conditions over the weekend. After several days of dry weather, residents should prepare for showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Wednesday, followed by a sharp dip in temperatures before things warm up again by the weekend.

Wet and Chilly Midweek Ahead

A system moving across the Southeast will bring rain and potentially a thunderstorm to Columbia on Wednesday, February 19. Highs will struggle to reach 43°F (6°C), and with the damp conditions, it will feel even colder. Overnight, temperatures will drop to 33°F (0°C), bringing the possibility of some freezing conditions in areas north of the city.

By Thursday, February 20, the rain will clear out, but in its place, much colder air will settle in. The high will only reach 44°F (6°C), and by nighttime, expect temperatures to plunge to a frigid 21°F (-6°C). That’s well below normal for this time of year and could lead to frost concerns, so residents should take precautions with outdoor plants and pipes.

Friday, February 21, will remain cool but dry, with sunny skies and a high of 51°F (10°C). The overnight low will drop to 23°F (-5°C), another sign that winter isn’t done with the Carolinas just yet.

The Weekend Brings a Dramatic Warm-Up

If you’re tired of the chilly weather, good news is on the way! Starting Saturday, temperatures will begin climbing, making for a beautiful weekend across Columbia.

  • Saturday, February 22: Expect partly sunny skies with highs near 55°F (13°C) and lows around 33°F (1°C).
  • Sunday, February 23: Even warmer, with highs reaching 62°F (17°C). This will be the perfect day to get outdoors and shake off the winter chill.
  • Monday, February 24: A mix of sun and clouds, but temperatures will continue their upward trend, reaching 65°F (19°C), making it feel more like spring.

What This Means for You

  • Rain Gear Needed Wednesday: Keep an umbrella and rain jacket handy as showers are expected throughout the day. Roads may be slick during the morning and evening commutes.
  • Cold Snap Thursday and Friday: After the rain moves out, temperatures will drop sharply, with morning lows in the 20s. Bring in sensitive plants and take precautions with pipes.
  • Perfect Weekend Weather: After the cold snap, warmer temperatures return by Saturday, giving Columbia a chance to enjoy mild and pleasant conditions for outdoor activities.

Final Thoughts

This week brings a mix of everything—rain, chilly temperatures, and then a return to warmth just in time for the weekend. Be prepared for a soggy midweek and a brief but sharp cold spell before enjoying some of the nicest weather Columbia has seen in weeks.
