rctic Blast to Hit Hard! Extreme Cold Warning Issued for Oklahoma & Arkansas – What You Need to Know

A powerful Arctic blast is set to bring some of the coldest temperatures of the season to Oklahoma and Arkansas, with wind chills expected to plummet to a dangerous -17°F by Tuesday night. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning, advising residents to take immediate precautions as exposure to these bitter temperatures could be life-threatening.

This type of extreme cold can cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes, and wind chills this low will make it feel even worse. Power grids will be under heavy strain, roads could become hazardous, and even everyday activities like starting your car or stepping outside could become risky.

How Cold Will It Get?

The coldest air of the season will settle in by late Monday night and continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing subzero wind chills and dangerously low temperatures. Here’s what different areas can expect:

  • Oklahoma City, OK – Currently 26°F, but by Tuesday night, lows will dip to 0°F, with wind chills making it feel like -17°F. A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will make conditions even more hazardous.
  • Little Rock, AR – Temperatures will drop into the teens, with lows around 17°F and wind chills as low as -5°F. Cloud cover and freezing rain could make roads treacherous.

Major Risks and Hazards

This kind of extreme cold is not just uncomfortable—it can be deadly. Residents need to be aware of the following dangers:

  • Frostbite & HypothermiaExposed skin can freeze within 30 minutes, leading to severe tissue damage. Hypothermia is a serious risk if you are not dressed properly or are exposed for too long.
  • Power Outages – The high demand for electricity could strain power grids, leading to blackouts that could leave thousands without heat.
  • Frozen Pipes & Home DamageWater pipes can freeze and burst, causing costly damage. Taking precautions before temperatures drop further is essential.
  • Hazardous Travel Conditions – The combination of freezing rain, sleet, and snow could make roads icy and extremely dangerous. If you must drive, prepare for emergencies.

How to Stay Safe During This Cold Snap

With temperatures this low, preparation is critical. Officials urge residents to follow these safety precautions:

  • Stay indoors whenever possible. If you must go outside, layer up with insulated clothing, gloves, hats, and scarves to protect your skin.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel. If you have to drive, carry an emergency kit with blankets, food, water, extra batteries, and a fully charged phone.
  • Prepare for potential power outages. Have flashlights, extra blankets, and alternative heating sources ready. Never use a generator or grill indoors, as they produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.
  • Bring pets inside. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Outdoor animals should have warm bedding, fresh water (not frozen), and a proper shelter.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals. Make sure they have enough supplies and a warm place to stay.

How Long Will This Last?

This Arctic blast is expected to linger through midweek, with bitterly cold temperatures lasting for several days. Even after the warning expires, temperatures will remain below freezing, meaning hazardous conditions could persist throughout the week.

Officials are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take this cold seriously. This is not just another winter night—this is a potentially dangerous weather event that requires immediate preparation.
