A Pennsylvania SPCA volunteer was devastated Tuesday morning as he arrived at the parking lot and witnessed a man at the far end of the lot tying two dogs to the fence. As the volunteer hurried over, the owner spotted him, dropped the leashes, hurried over to his car and sped away.

Two dogs had been left behind. The small terrier, now named Shinzo, panicked and ran towards the busy street. He was desperate and had no idea where he was going; he was just so scared to have been left behind by his owner. For a moment, it appeared as if he would be struck by a vehicle running out into the busy highway area.

The other dog, a “lowrider” pittie, now named Corazon, didn’t run.

instead heartbroken and confused, he frantically tried to jump back into the car that was moving away with each passing moment. It was as though he couldn’t comprehend why he’d been left behind.
Fortunately staff members as well as the volunteer rushed out to the parking lot to help. Erie Avenue, just steps away, is a very busy traffic area, and a potential death threat neither one of the dogs could ever have known. One wrong move, and they would have lost their lives.

The dogs were both captured after a short chase, and both dogs are now safe at the shelter.
Both Shinzo and Corazon are justifiably very frightened and unsure of their new surroundings. Both dogs are processing the trauma they were faced with just a few days ago, but are now reported to be settling in and starting to trust the new people in their lives.
This heartbreaking act serves as a painful reminder: abandonment is never the answer. If you ever find yourself unable to care for your pets, please reach out to us, to ACCT Philly, or to any of our compassionate partners. We are here to help.
Many thanks to the Pennsylvania SPCA for saving the lives of Shinzo and Corazon. These dogs deserved better, and it is hoped they will find families who cherish and love them – not tie them up and abandon them.
