New York City has a parking problem, and that’s not a surprise. However, SUVs were parked in front of fire hydrants, and that prevented firefighters from doing their jobs. As a result, people were placed in more serious danger.
SUVs parked in front of fire hydrants blocked New York firefighters
A fire burned quickly through an apartment building in Brooklyn on Sunday even though firefighters immediately responded.
According to Yahoo, the New York Fire Department (FDNY) shared that two SUVs were parked in front of fire hydrants. They blocked them from accessing them. One SUV was a massive Chevrolet Tahoe.
The vehicles prevented the firefighters from being able to rescue people and prevent injuries in time. As a result, a 37-year-old man lost his life, and a toddler was fatally injured.
FDNY commissioner, Robert Tucker, begs drivers in all five boroughs to not leave their cars parked on fire hydrants.That’s the reason for the outcome people had to face that day.
He explained that it was a fatal fire and there’s no doubt that the vehicles that were parked on hydrants slowed firefighters down from engaging in firefighting tactics.
It’s unclear if the firefighters used their trucks to move the vehicles out of the way or just worked around them. But Tucker explained that there is no time to waste when lives are on the line.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire and residents wonder why their neighbors were irresponsibly parked. A few people injured during the fire are still recovering at a local hospital.
