Owners with these electric lawn mowers should stop using these models immediately.
RYOBI electric lawn mower buyers in the United States and Canada should ensure that they don’t have one of the models named in a recent recall. The manufacturer is set to replace the affected self-propelled, battery-operated units ahead of fire risks and reports of injuries.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission named 217,500 electric lawn mowers for increased risk of fire and 2 injuries
RYOBI, a TTI Outdoor Power Equipment brand (TTIOPE), is recalling some of its 40V 21-inch walk-behind electric lawn mowers. According to a US Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice, a push-on connector within the powerhead of the mower can overheat, increasing the risk of fire.
The recall names approximately 217,500 electric mowers in the United States and 28,400 in Canada. Unfortunately, TTIOPE reports that the heat-prone component has resulted in at least five fires and two injuries. As a result, owners of the affected models should stop using their mowers immediately and confirm their recall status.
Consumers can confirm the recall status of their electric lawn mowers by referring to the serial number. Consequently, the CPSC says owners can find their model and serial numbers by checking the inside of the green lawn mower housing just beneath the cover. The affected model numbers are as follows:
- RY401014BTLUS
- RY401014US
- RY401140US
- RY401015BTLUS
- RY401015US
- RY401150US
- RY401140US-Y
- RY401150US-Y
- RY401020
- RY401200
Moreover, if a unit has a KC21032D010001 or KC21327N999999 serial number in one of the above electric lawn mower models, owners should seek replacement immediately. Fortunately, consumers can contact RYOBI support for safety and replacement instructions.
In addition to model and serial numbers, owners can refer to when and where they purchased their mowers. Incidentally, the recall notice says the affected models sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet from February 2021 through January 2025.
