Ford isn’t quite sure why some backup cameras are failing.
A recent Ford recall names nearly 73,000 SUVs and pickup trucks for faulty camera images. Unfortunately, the recall issue could compromise a driver’s view while reversing, increasing the likelihood of a crash or accident.
The Ford recall names 72,624 for mysteriously malfunctioning cameras and increased ‘risk of a crash’
The Blue Oval recently issued a recall for Ford and Lincoln vehicles, citing “ intermittent or persistent loss of image” in models equipped with Magna-sourced rear-facing cameras.
Specifically, Ford Super Duty trucks and Lincoln Corsair SUVs from 2020 to 2022 may have camera issues that ‘increase the risk of crash’. Additionally, the 2021 Ford Expedition may have faulty rearview cameras.
Affected models | Model years | Approx number of vehicles |
---|---|---|
Ford Expedition | 2021 | 21,088 |
Ford Super Duty | 2021-2022 | 40,409 |
Lincoln Corsair | 2020-2022 | 11,127 |
Worryingly, Ford reported that the cause of the faulty rear cameras was a mystery at the time of the recall notice. However, like other recalls, the automaker will offer a remedy when a fix is available using its service network.
Unfortunately, the news follows a recall for nearly 300,000 Ford SUVs. However, while the latest camera recall falls under the NHTSA’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) for rear visibility, the January SUV recall named faulty batteries in Maverick pickup trucks and Bronco Sport models.
If you suspect your vehicle has an outstanding recall, use the NHTSA’s lookup tool. Owners can access recall information and learn about remedies by entering their VIN or license plate number.
