Nissan and Honda seemed like a match made in heaven. But now they’re fighting and might not merge.
By now, Nissan and Honda should be in their honeymoon phase, but their plans to merge are getting a little rocky. Honda swooped in like a knight in shiny armor to invest in Nissan, but now there are rumors of a breakup.
Honda and Nissan might not merge after all
According to the Pickup Truck Talk, the love between Honda and Nissan might be struggling. Reportedly, unnamed sources shared that the proposed merger between the two automakers is collapsing.
It might not move forward as Nissan decides to no longer move forward with Honda. But luckily, Honda understands and the breakup could be mutual.
Honda’s proposal to take a stake in Nissan to make it a subsidiary instead of a full merger could be the main issue. Nissan wanted to merge as equals to become the third largest automaker behind Volkswagen and Toyota.
Rumors claim that the Japanese government wanted the merger to happen to fight China’s rapidly expanding auto industry.
But both automakers shared that this information isn’t based on anything they have announced. Nissan aims to finalize its decision by mid-February and Honda mentioned that they’re still participating in ongoing discussions.
In November 2024, Nissan said it needed investors to help it survive and stabilize its operations. Otherwise, the automaker may collapse by the end of the year.
Then Honda swooped in with exciting ideas to collaborate on electric vehicles and other specific areas. For example, Honda raised my hopes for the potential Nissan Frontier Hybrid.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. However, the merger hasn’t officially collapsed, and fighting this early isn’t the best sign.
