Starting the second week of January through the middle of February, bear cubs are born. Bear League recently introduced us to Mama ‘Sugar Bear’ and her three-week-old cub ‘Snowflake’ discovered napping and cuddling in Tahoe.

Each year about this time, homeowners in Tahoe report hearing faint crying sounds coming from beneath their homes. It is not acceptable to move the bears at this point, and the situation is explained to the homeowner. A monitoring system is safely set up, designed with non-invasive camera to carefully observe the mother bear and her cub usually expected to leave their hibernation dens in April.

We have a team of BEAR League volunteers who take turns watching the cameras 24/7. Right now we have three homes in the Tahoe Basin with newborn cubs who we are responsible for.
Neither homeowners nor the BEAR League knew the bears had been hibernating until after the cubs were born. If the information received that a bear is under a house and the bear might be pregnant, experts confer to make the best decision about whether to leave the mom or move her to a better location before the cub is born. Taken into consideration are busy roads nearby, no trees around to teach the cubs to climb, unleashed dogs in the neighborhood or residents who are very wary of a mother bear with her cub in the area.

“BEAR League’s goal is to allow interested, kind and open minded viewers to witness the sweetness and Motherly Love that Bear Mamas share with their cubs, pretty much the same kind of love, protection, tenderness that human Moms have for their little human babies.”
At this time there are three homes in the Tahoe Basin with newborn cubs. Most homeowners are kind enough to allow the bears to nurture their cubs and leave on their own.
(If you saw the netting in the corner of the video, it has since been removed without bothering the mom and her cub.)

“This is Sugar Bear and her 3 and a half week old cub, Snowflake, under a house at Lake Tahoe. BEAR League has a camera on the ‘den’ in order to protect them from harm. We can share some of our live video clips with our followers so you can also appreciate a Mother’s Love…. be she a person..or a bear.”
