At the Sedgwick County Zoo, hearts were broken after the mother of a newborn maned wolf pup died. The tiny wolf named Amora had been orphaned.

According to zoo officials, even though maned wolves are naturally solitary animals, young pups need companionship to properly grow and mature. And so, along with the cooperation of the Kansas Humane Society, it was time to adopt a puppy to help nurture lonely Layla.

Meet Slinky; this adorable brindle mix arrived at the shelter the same day Amora was born. Her sister had just been adopted, and Slinky had been lonely and depressed. Three weeks later, Slinky and Amora met and have since become best friends. They were carefully introduced and are set to remain together until the wolf pup matures.

Slinky has done well helping her pal socialize and has since been adopted by a member of the zoo’s staff. As per the SSP (Species Survival Plan), Amora will eventually transition to living with other maned wolves, carrying on the legacy of her species.

Placing animals in captivity with dogs for companionship has become standard practice for some animals.
