Three mountain lion cubs are recovering at the Oakland Zoo in California after their mother was killed when struck by a car two weeks ago.
Meet Fern, Thistle and Spruce, who were found by California Department of Fish and Wildlife in Portola Valley in San Mateo County less than half a mile from a deceased female lion. While there were many witnesses of the mountain lion after she was hit, the carcass has since disappeared and is still being investigated. As such, CDFW can’t confirm a relationship between the kittens and female lions using DNA.
The kittens were found hiding under a car, and there were no signs of their mother for more than two weeks. The kittens seemed very hungry and disoriented prompting the CDFW to capture them and evaluate their health and their futures.
Nik Dehejia, CEO of Oakland Zoo emphasized the need to protect the wild animals in California.
As human development has significantly enhanced the wellbeing of our communities, it has simultaneously taken a toll on wildlife and their natural habitats. As we continue to thrive as a species, it is essential for coexistence that we also take action to ensure the survival of others. Now more than ever, we must continually advocate for establishing wildlife corridors, such as the recent overpass in Los Angeles, to maintain the biodiversity of our Golden State.
After examination, Oakland Zoo veterinarians determined they were around three months old. In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because Fern, Thistle, and Spruce are so young, they lack those skills and cannot return to the wild.
Also called pumas, cougars and screamers, these cats are classified as “specially protected” in California and cannot be hunted. The three cubs are not expected to remain at the zoo and will be transferred to a wildlife sanctuary.
