In 2024, Ford’s ‘fake’ Mustang outsold the gas-powered for the first time

When the Ford Mustang Mach-E was announced in 2019, it faced Cybertruck-level criticism. After all, a “real” Mustang would never be without a gas-powered engine, and anyone who was a real Mustang fan would never own one. Anytime one was spotted in the wild, the reaction was usually of disgust, followed by a phrase similar to: “That car should not be called a Mustang.”

Maybe it wasn’t the lack of fossil fuels that made people hate it so much – maybe it was the SUV body configuration with Mustang-like tail and headlights, paired with the icon cantering pony strapped to the front and rear.

The point is, that it was not very well received. Until it was. In 2024, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E outsold the gas-powered model for the first time. Ford sold 51,745 Mach-Es versus 44,003 gas-powered Mustangs. Ford isn’t exactly shocked since EV sales across the board have risen by 34.8% over 2023.

That means, despite the initial backlash, the Mach-E is now Ford’s second-best-selling EV, next to the F-150 Lightning of course. Sales for the “real” Mustang are slowing too, with a nearly 10% drop in sales compared to 2023. It’s also the second best-selling EV in the nation, just slightly behind the Tesla Model Y, reported ElecTrek.

Ford aims to make Mach-E adoption easy

Even after selling over 285,000 EVs in the US last year, Ford still offers the “Power Promise” program, which gives EV buyers a Level 2 charger at home. Ford even pays for the thing to be installed, so… That makes it pretty attractive.

Like the gas-powered Mustang, there’s also a plethora of Mach-E trim levels to choose from, even a performance-oriented GT version lending a lot more horsepower, nicer wheels, body styling, humongous brakes, and a much more punchy drive style.

Compared to most family-style EVs, it’s also a lot more affordable, with prices starting at $36,495 and going up to $52,495 for the GT variant.

So, despite people talking smack about the Mach-E when it first debuted, Jim Farley is probably laughing his buns off.
