Well, that didn’t go very well.
A state trooper in White County, Arkansas attempted to perform a pit maneuver on a truck and trailer. Unfortunately for the police officer, the attempt ended in an unexpected disaster. The trooper, who was attempting to stop the vehicle during a high-speed chase, lost control of his police car, resulting in a rollover crash.
Trying to PIT maneuver a massive truck and trailer didn’t end well for an Arkansas state trooper
The Precision Immobilization Technique, or “PIT maneuver,” is a popular tactic for police officers to end high-speed chases. To perform the maneuver, a police officer typically positions their patrol car to make contact with the rear quarter panel of a suspect vehicle and instigate a spin.
When executed well, a PIT maneuver is an effective way for police officers to stop a potentially deadly car chase. Of course, it’s not without risk. Suspect vehicles often crash after a PIT maneuver. Sometimes, police cars have a bad day after attempting the technique. Like in the case of an Arkansas state trooper who tried the tactic with a staggeringly heavy utility truck and its trailer.
The truck is heading down a dirt road in a Ford F-Series pickup truck with a flatbed. However, the suspect is also towing a large trailer with a New Holland track loader and other equipment on board.
The ASP officer drove up to the truck’s driver-side quarter panel. However, after trying to PIT the truck, the trailer snaps back and pushes the police car off the left-hand side of the road. Worse yet, the dash cam video captures the patrol car rolling over onto its roof.
Commenters were, well, less than polite with their responses to the video. “PIT a 25,000 lbs combined weight vehicle in a 4,500 lbs cruiser is optimistic,” one viewer commented. Another commenter responded by saying, “Fighting a little outside your weight class, fella!”
