The best-selling pickup in Mexico is one of the poorest-selling in the U.S.

Mexico’s favorite pickup truck is far and away the Nissan NP300. This midsize may look familiar to U.S. buyers because here it’s sold as the “Frontier.” While all of the “Detroit Three” sell trucks and other vehicles in Mexico, they can’t seem to keep up with Nissan, which is the best-selling brand south of the border.

What’s the best-selling pickup truck in Mexico?

Mexico loves the midsize Nissan NP300. In 2024, Nissan sold 59,031 new NP300s. That’s down 4.6% from 2023 but still far ahead of every other truck. The NP300 is closely related to the Nissan Frontier available in the U.S., though it’s far from the best-selling truck there.

The Nissan NP300 sold in Mexico is badged as the “Navara” in many other markets. It’s part of the truck’s third generation, which first went on sale in 2014 and got a facelift in 2020. It has several turbocharged inline-four engine options, a 7-speed automatic transmission built by Jatco, and a manual 6-speed option.

No other pickup truck comes close to Nissan’s Mexican sales numbers. In fact, no other truck ranked among the 10 most popular vehicles in Mexico.

Do Nissan trucks sell well in the US?

Historically, Nissan trucks have been the lowest-selling in the U.S. The automaker’s 2022 decision to engineer a new Frontier exclusively for the U.S. market doubled the midsize truck’s sales, but it still lags far behind competitors such as the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Maverick.

In 2024, Nissan sold 13,351 full-size Titans in the U.S. Its midsize Frontier did considerably better: Nissan sold 69,813 units. That’s up from the 58,124 Frontiers Nissan sold in 2023.

Since 1997, Nissan has sold the same midsize truck globally. In the U.S., it was badged as the “Frontier,” but it was identical to the NP300 sold in places such as Mexico. For the 2022 model year, Nissan designed a new Frontier exclusively for the U.S. and Canada. Nissan retained the previous Frontier’s V6 powertrain but engineered a larger body with more capacity and a more aggressive design. By the first quarter of 2022, it had successfully doubled the Frontier’s sales.

By 2024, the Frontier had outsold its midsize competitor—the Ford Ranger. Ford only sold 51,591 Rangers in 2024. It also outsold compact trucks such as the Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Cruz. However, the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado both outsold the Frontier, as did nearly every full-size pickup.

Mexico loves its Nissans

Nissan is easily the best-selling automaker in Mexico. The country’s favorite 2024 car was the Nissan Versa (93,780 sales). The Nissan March (27,926), Nissan Sentra (23,694), and of course, the NP300 also made the list of the top 10 most popular vehicles in Mexico.
