Las Vegas ice cream truck gets mistaken for ICE
Billy Settlemyers, the owner of Las Vegas Ice Cream Patrol is frustrated over being mistaken for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle. He swears that he’s just an ice cream man.
According to the Hill, social media posts mistakenly claimed that the law enforcement-themed ice cream truck was an ICE vehicle, leading to community backlash.
Settlemyers shared that ICE and Border Patrol officers don’t use trucks from 1985. However, the black and white truck with a badge painted on the side looks real.
Customers often ask the owner if he’s a police officer or ex-law enforcement, but he’s a mechanic. He set out to build a fun and creative truck to sell ice cream. But other drivers often slow down around the truck and think it’s a police vehicle from a distance.
A person posted a video of the truck and said to be on the lookout for ‘ ice cream’ trucks that play music to get people to come outside.
Before Settlemeyers even saw the video, rumors quickly spread about immigration raids. Thus posts spread about ICE operating in Las Vegas. One post shared that there was an ICE vehicle disguised as an ice cream truck.
Now he’s worried that he will become a target. He’s worried that people will see the video and it might lead to dangerous repercussions. Some people have removed videos and images of the truck from social media and apologized for their actions.
Settlemeyers shared that some of his most loyal customers have come to his defense and he appreciates their effort.
