Two fires at commercial buildings were investigated in Oceanside overnight, but police say they do not believe they were related.

The first fire was reportedly deliberately set in a plastic drainage pipe outside a movie theatre in downtown Oceanside, but no one was inside at the time.

The first fire was reported at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Regal Cinema at 401 Mission Ave., the Oceanside Fire Department said in a statement.

Fire crews found fire coming from a drainage pipe on the front wall of the theater and heavy smoke was billowing from the roof above.

Crews were assigned to make sure nobody was inside the theater, the OFD said.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the point of origin and found  a room on the opposite side of the exterior wall that had been filled with smoke, fire officials said. Damage to the interior was kept to a minimum, they said.

The OFD said its investigators were at the scene looking for the cause of the fire and no suspects were immediately reported.

The second fire was reported at an American Tire Depot at 515 N. Coast Highway in downtown Oceanside at 1:03 a.m. Thursday, when a 911 caller reported smoke coming from the roof of the building.

Fire investigators on scene indicated that the fire started in the roof, possibly due to an electrical wiring failure. However, other causes have not yet been ruled out and are being investigated.

“The OFD would like to remind residents and business owners that outdated electrical wiring is a common but often overlooked issue that can pose significant risks to your property and safety,” Oceanside police said in a statement.

“Many buildings, especially older ones, still rely on outdated electrical systems that were not designed to handle the demands of today’s modern appliances and electronics.

“Ignoring these aging systems can lead to severe consequences, including electrical fires, electrocution, and costly repairs.”

No injuries were reported in either fire.
