Heartbreaking: Sweetest shepherd returned to shelter for ‘separation anxiety’ after left alone slated for euthanasia

At the San Bernardino Animal Services in California, a four-year-old shepherd was returned to the shelter just a few weeks after she was adopted. For the second time, Cassidy finds herself on the dreaded list to be put to sleep.

But look at her! Cassidy is full of life and a lovely girl.

The shelter has scheduled Cassidy’s euthanasia for January 31 because she has been at the shelter too long. The first time she arrived at the shelter dates back to October 28, 2024. Because of overcrowding and no offers for adoption, she was scheduled to be put to sleep.

Fortunately, on December 19, 2024, she was adopted, but returned just a few weeks later because of “separation anxiety” when her new owners left her alone.

Experts say separation anxiety is very common in newly adopted shelter dogs due to their past experiences of uncertainty and potential abandonment. The dogs may be more anxious when left alone. The best way to manage this is through gradual desensitization.

It is suggested to start by leaving the dog alone for short periods of time and gradually increasing the time; helping him build confidence and trust in your return. Make sure to contact a licensed trainer or behaviorists for individual advice.

Cassidy would do best with an experienced and dedicated foster who can help her with positive reinforcement and patience.

Cassidy has been a shelter staff favorite.
