
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an SDPD officer in downtown San Diego late Tuesday.
San Diego Police Department officers responded at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday to 600 W. Broadway regarding a battery report.
As they were investigating the call, they learned of a shooting at the MTS trolley platform that took place at 8:51 p.m.
As they began to investigate the shooting, the officers shot an unidentified man in his early 20s near 1100 Kettner Blvd. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The officer involved in the shooting has been employed by the San Diego Police Department for just over two years and is assigned to patrol at the Central Division, according to the police department.
“The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough,” the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions.”
Additionally, SDPD will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s discharge of his firearm, the statement added.
