Heartwarming: Saddest bulldog abandoned in trash bag now living his best life

In Des Moines, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, rescued a dog that had been abandoned in a plastic trash bag tossed on the side of the street on the south side of the city back on December 10, 2024. At the time, the bulldog weighed only 23 pounds and was extremely weak.

When the dog arrived at the emergency veterinarian facility, he was immediately administered IV fluids and put on a special feeding program to slowly accustom his body to eating again, and to monitor a safe weight gaining program. Slowly, the dog gained weight and began to recover from the extreme neglect and cruelty.

When it was time for him to move on to a foster home where he could recover, a couple Dave and Karen Miglin, who had seen his story on the local news, offered to be his foster family. They named him Wally.

And here’s the really special part… Wally was a “foster failure”. Now before you jump and get upset, know that a “foster failure”

is when a foster parent adopts a pet they were temporarily caring for. While it’s technically a “failure” because the placement was meant to be temporary, it’s often considered a “success” because the pet found a permanent home.

Last week, Wally officially became part of the family. He has dog friends and lots of soft, comfortable places to relax and nap.

We hope Wally’s story and happy outcome will inspire every loving family to consider fostering and adopting a pet in need. Reach out to your local ARL to learn how. Until then, enjoy some of these brief stories about our sweet Wally.

No suspects have ever been identified in Wally’s mistreatment. The Des Moines Police Department continues the investigation into Wally’s neglect and abandonment. Investigative leads, including tips and examination of forensic evidence, have not yet led to the person responsible.
