Detroit-based rapper is suing Lyft after a driver refused service due to her size

A Detroit-based rapper is suing Lyft after a driver refused to give her a ride in his car because of her size.

She feels hurt by the encounter.

Lyft and Uber drivers are important to today’s society for many reasons. In most cases, people hail rides using the respective apps, and then they’re driven to where they need to go. However, one recent story finds a Detroit-based rapper being refused a ride in a Lyft driver’s car after he decided his vehicle wouldn’t accommodate her size. Now, she’s suing.

It’s important to note that the cars belong to the Uber and Lyft drivers and not the companies

It’s not uncommon to call either Lyft or Uber drivers when you don’t have a vehicle or find it more convenient to ride instead of driving yourself. According to Fox 2 Detroit, Dajua Blanding, who goes by the rap name Dank Demoss, did just that recently. Apparently, she was going to a Detroit Lions watch party. Once the Lyft driver arrived, he decided that his car would not adequately accommodate her size.

Of course, we know this because the rapper recorded the encounter with the Lyft driver in his car. During the video, the driver can be heard being as friendly as possible. He told the woman he was concerned about his tires, but she insisted she could fit. The woman even says she has a friend with a smaller car that she fits into. The unnamed driver also told her he would refund the ride and that she should order the XXL level, which both Uber and Lyft drivers with larger cars offer.

Now, she plans to pursue legal action against the Lyft driver for refusing the ride in his car. She has enlisted the help of  Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan. They argue that by law, denying a person a ride based on their weight is the same as racial or religious discrimination. Lyft has issued a statement on the matter. It reads, “Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination—we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness. Our community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination.”
