8 Rare Dimes and an $18.4 Million Quarter

Rare dimes are extremely valuable pieces of American history that are more than just coins. Some were produced in extremely small quantities, while others are valuable due to errors made during minting. This article covers 8 Rare Dimes, their unique stories, and why collectors are willing to pay so much for them.

The 1894-S Barber Dime

The 1894-S Barber Dime is a coin collector’s dream, often called the “Holy Grail” of rare dimes. Only 24 were minted at the San Francisco Mint, and today, only nine are known to exist. One of these dimes brought $1.9 million in 2016.

A circulated copy could sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Look for an 1894 dime with an “S” mint mark and a design featuring Liberty on the obverse side and a wreath on the reverse side.

The 1916-D Mercury Dime

The Barber design was replaced by the Mercury Dime design in 1916. However, the Denver Mint only produced 264,000 dimes that year, which makes it extremely rare. It may sell for over $10,000 when in perfect condition, but even an used one is worth thousands. Look for the 1916 Mercury Dime’s “D” mint mark on the back to identify.

The 1968 No-S Proof Roosevelt Dime

Certain 1968 San Francisco-minted proof dimes are extremely valuable because they don’t have the “S” mint mark. In perfect condition, this error coin may sell for over $20,000. Look for Rare dimes without the “S” mint mark in 1968 proof sets to identify.

The 1942/1 Mercury Dime Overdate

A “2” was stamped over a “1” in the year because some dies were reused during World War II. This coin is extremely rare because of the overdate error. It can sell for more than $5,000 when it is uncirculated. To identify, examine the date on 1942 Mercury Dimes for traces of the overdate.

The 1975 No-S Proof Roosevelt Dime

Like the 1968 error, some proof dimes from 1975 lack the “S” mint mark. However, only two examples are known to exist. These coins are worth an astronomical $500,000 or more. To identify, examine 1975 proof sets for dimes without the “S” mint mark.

The 1965 Silver Transition Dime

In 1965, the US switched from silver to clad composition for rare dimes, but a few were mistakenly struck on silver. Real examples are valued at more than $5,000+. Weight the coin; silver dimes weigh approximately 2.5 grams, compared to the standard 2.27 grams.

The 1982 No-P Roosevelt Dime

The Philadelphia Mint produced some rare dimes in 1982 that lacked the “P” mint mark. When uncirculated, these coins may sell for several hundred dollars or more. Look for 1982 dimes without a mint mark to identify them.

The 1960 Double Die Obverse Roosevelt Dime

Some 1960 dimes show doubling on the obverse, especially in the date and lettering. These coins are worth several thousand dollars when they are in good condition. To identify Roosevelt Dime, use a magnifier to see doubling on the date and lettering.
