1 Detroit brand hasn’t assembled any vehicles  in the USA in years

The modern car market operates as a truly global industry. Automakers often engineer models on one continent, build them on another, and sell them on a third. So it’s no surprise that Detroit’s Big Three have moved some production abroad. What may surprise you is that Chrysler hasn’t assembled a vehicle in the U.S. for nearly a decade. However, its sister brands—Dodge, Jeep, and Ram—continue building vehicles here.

What was the last vehicle Chrysler built in the USA?

Chrysler last assembled a vehicle in the U.S. when it produced the Chrysler 200, a luxury-badged version of the Dodge Dart. Both midsize sedans rolled off the assembly line in Sterling Heights, Michigan. FCA announced the discontinuation of both models in 2016, and the final Chrysler 200 belonged to the 2017 model year.

Since then, Chrysler has assembled multiple models in Canada but none in the U.S. The Chrysler 300, a full-size sedan, shared a chassis and factory with the Dodge Charger. That facility stood in Brampton, Ontario, just outside Toronto. By the end of the 300’s production run, all V8 engines available were built in Mexico.

After Chrysler ended 300 production in December 2023, the Pacifica minivan became its only remaining model. The Pacifica, assembled in Windsor, Ontario—just across the Detroit River—offers both plug-in hybrid and traditional powertrains. Chrysler sold 109,339 Pacificas in 2024.

Did Chrysler build many vehicles in Detroit?

Walter Chrysler transformed the Maxwell Motor Company into Chrysler Corporation in 1925. For decades, Chrysler defined itself as Detroit’s engineering-driven luxury automaker. In many ways, it was the “Tesla” or “Volvo” of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

The company collaborated with the Wright brothers to develop the first wind-tunnel-tested car. Chrysler trademarked early antifreeze, pioneered the sealed headlight beam, and introduced the powerful “HEMI” V8. Headquartered in the Detroit area, Chrysler expanded to acquire Dodge, Plymouth, and Jeep.

By the 2000s, automakers outsourced much of their manufacturing. Many iconic recent Chryslers came from outside the U.S. The Chrysler Crossfire originated in Germany. The PT Cruiser came from Mexico. The first Pacifica, a crossover based on the Dodge Journey’s chassis, rolled out of Windsor.

Even 20 years ago, few Chryslers were built in Detroit. The short-lived Chrysler Aspen, a rebadged Dodge Durango, came from Detroit. The limited-run Plymouth Prowler (badged as the Chrysler Prowler from 2000-2002) was hand-built in Detroit. The iconic Town & Country minivan was assembled in Missouri. (In 2008, Chrysler moved it to Windsor). In many ways, the Chrysler 200—advertised as “imported from Detroit”—was the car that brought Chrysler back to the Motor City.

What vehicles are built in the USA?

All of the “Detroit Three” continue assembling some iconic vehicles in the U.S. For example, Ford builds its entire F-Series truck lineup domestically. Jeep manufactures the Wrangler and Gladiator in Toledo, Ohio. Chevrolet produces the Corvette—advertised as “America’s sports car”—in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Foreign automakers have also recognized the advantages of building vehicles in the U.S. The country offers manufacturing expertise and competitive labor costs while bypassing tariffs. As a result, Cars.com’s 2024 American-Made Index includes many vehicles wearing foreign badges. The ranking factors in final assembly location and component sourcing. Here’s how the top 20 models stack up:
