More than 250 animals including foxes coyotes and wolf dog hybrids rescued from ‘horrific’ Ohio fur farm

In Ashtabula County, Ohio, more than 250 animals were removed from a fur and urine farm after they were found existing in “horrific” conditions. Included in the animals seized were foxes, coyotes, skunks and wolf-dog hybrids.

According to a press release from the Humane Society of the United States, the owner of Grand River Fox Exchange died last month, escalating the terrible conditions on the property. The vice president of the HSUS, Adam Parascandola commented on the heartbreaking situation.

this is one of the most horrific situations i have ever Seen- the terror and pain was palpable.

The animals had been living in “filthy wire-bottom cages” with “little to no protection from the frigid conditions.” The farm raised and slaughtered the animals for their fur and their urine; in addition to selling them as exotic pets. Some of the animals removed had been missing legs, ears, tails and other body parts. The animals lost toes due to having been caught in the wire flooring. The ones missing limbs were likely due to the steel traps.

On arrival, one investigator found a dying coyote still caught in a trap. Other wild animals were already dead and many others were severely dehydrated and left to starve.

Some of the animals had to be humanely euthanized because of their condition. Many of the survivors have since been sent to wildlife rehabilitation centers, including West Wildlife Rehab who admitted having a hard time coping with the conditions these poor animals had to both endure and die.

The last thing I saw before we left Ashtabula was the coyote barn. There were dead coyotes in cages and on the floor, massive piles of feces and bones in and underneath the cages.

I had done a fine job keeping it together up to that point, but this pretty much did me in, and I had to collect myself in my car before heading for home

Responders from the HSUS provided daily care to the animals on the property for “several weeks” while assisting authorities in Ohio, arranging placement for the animals with licensed wildlife facilities. On Saturday, all of the animals had been removed.

And just in case, readers are not familiar with fur and urine farms, these are the unfortunate animals so often trapped and then raised to be slaughtered or sold as they are held captive in egregious conditions. Urine is advertised as used in hunting and trapping.

These animals are often kept in awful conditions, while inhumane slaughter methods are employed to prevent damage to their fur.

There are currently no federal regulations related to the welfare, care or slaughter for animals used for their fur. In addition, Ohio does not have laws or standards of care for fur farms. As of now, only New York has a ban on anal and genital electrocution of foxes.

The following video has been released by the HSUS:

“Documents found on the Ohio property indicate the owner sold pelts to Fur Harvesters Auction, the last fur auction in North America located in Ontario, Canada. Once the fur is sold at auction, it can be exported globally and sold to consumers as home decor and fashion products, such as fur-pom hats and trim on gloves or shoes.”

Please make it a priority NOT to buy any fur products. (Imitation furs are just as beautiful and can eliminate suffering as described at this terrible fur farm)
