20-year-old Sai Varshith Kandula of Saint Louis faces eight years behind bars in federal prison after a failed attempt to attack the White House with a rented U-Haul truck.
According to police reports, Kandula took a one-way flight from Saint Louis to the Dulles International Airport. Then he rented a box truck and drove to Washington D.C.
According to Fox News, he drove onto the sidewalk as pedestrians jumped out of the way. Kandula hit protective barriers, reversed, and then struck the metal barriers a second time. The damage cost $4,322 to repair.
Then the truck was damaged and started smoking. The smoke and a leaking fluid came from the engine compartment. So, Kandula decided to jump out the back with a large red and white flag with a swastika on it.
Police officers and members of the Secret Service arrested him while he tried waving the flag around. This failed attempt occurred after weeks of planning.
Kandula tried posing as other drivers and made several attempts to access vehicles and armed security guards. He also tried renting several large semi-trucks and dump trucks. Kandula pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury or depredation of property of the United States.
He admitted that he wanted to come to power and replace the democratically elected government with a dictatorship fueled by the ideology of Nazi Germany.
