14-year-old saves her parents and horse during truck wreck
14-year-old Mia Gilpin saved the lives of her parents and beloved horse after their Ram truck and trailer flipped into a canal. Everyone nearly drowned during this hit-and-run incident on I-59.
Another driver swerved into the family’s truck and kept going. Once the truck and trailer landed upside down, Mia didn’t waste any time. She felt the vehicles stop flipping and told her parents she would get them out.
She kicked out a window while not wearing any shoes and pulled her parents to safety. Then she went to rescue her horse, Whiskey.
The horse trailer became detached mid-air and flipped in the canal. She entered the back and got her horse to walk out of the trailer and jump in the water.
According to KBTX, police officers are looking for the white pickup truck that hit the Ram and fled the scene. It should be showing signs of damage.
The Gilpin family is shocked and heartbroken to learn that someone could cause that much life-threatening damage and just leave. The other driver made no effort to help them.
If their truck had flipped 10 feet earlier they would have been submerged in the water. No one would have been able to see them until the next morning.
The family and horse have been treated for minor injuries. They’re lucky to have been able to walk away with their lives.
Louisiana authorities urge anyone with related information about the incident or white truck to contact Crimestoppers at 225-344-STOP.
