From frozen paws to couch snoozing: Dog survived on her own never imagining life could be so fine

At Stray Rescue of St. Louis, temperatures have been in the single digits. Local residents and police officers had spotted a
dog living alone in an abandoned building. The snow and ice had piled up; there had been no sunshine to even partially melt the slippery and dangerous conditions of the exterior, but there she was – a small black and white dog who looked just like “cookies and cream” trying to survive.

There had been blood on the surface of the snow where the dog had been walking. Her feet had been bleeding from being out in the ice and snow.

Life saving officer, Donna Lochmann and two compassionate police officers who regularly patrol the area helped with the rescue amid the frozen and dangerous conditions.

Meet Dippin Dottie – named because her black and white coat just look as if she was splattered with color.

She was so scared at first when we found her. She wanted to trust us so badly, but she couldn’t take that leap of faith to come close enough to get a lead over her head. So we set a trap. Thankfully, she went in as she couldn’t’ resist a warm breakfast in her skinny body.

Finally when she was safe in the Jeep and on her way back to the rescue, Dippin Dottie’s feet had been thawing out as ice pieces melted and fell away. When she arrived and warmed up, this scared, lonely and once timid dog was so grateful to have been rescued, she climbed into everyone’s lap and gave them the best dog juicy kisses she could muster.

Never, in a trillion years, did Dippin Dottie ever think this would be her life now. We found her last week, doing her best to survive in a freezing cold abandoned building, her paws bleeding from ice & cold.

And yes, the shelter is full, but these rescuers are able to put our pleas to the public and ask for help with foster homes. This is how so many lives are able to be saved.

We can save an infinite number of animals, full shelter or not, if we can continue to find wonderful humans to take a soul in their home, whether it’s forever or temporary.

To fosters everywhere, thank you for what you do.

For everyone considering it, Stray Rescue of St. Louis would love to meet you.

This is from Dippin Dottie’s foster mom:

Bailey Salinero

Hi! Foster mom here. Dottie is an absolute angel. Cuddling is her favorite, but she’s learning to play and her silly side is starting to show! She potties outside and listens and walks well on a leash and can even sit and shake. We are so in love with her and can’t wait for her to find a home that will spoil her forever
