A USPS van was recently clocked racing a Ford Mustang at 100 mph in a 60 mph zone. The van-version of the familiar USPS mail truck took off to chase a Mustang, only to end up with the “berries and cherries” in the rearview mirror. While it’s hardly a proper vehicle for racing, it had more than enough gusto to do something stupid.
A police officer’s body cam shows a traffic stop after a USPS mail truck drove 40 mph over the speed limit to race a Ford Mustang
A USPS driver ended up on the side of the road taking stock of a questionable decision after going 100 in a 60 mph zone outside of Fremont, Ohio. As expected, the police pulled the right-hand drive van variant of the all-too-familiar USPS mail truck over.
The officer saw the USPS van take off after a Ford Mustang. While some generations of Ford Mustang were a bit anemic, a modern S197, S550, or S650 Mustang is quick enough to contend with pricier performance car alternatives. It’s certainly fast enough to outrun a mail truck.
Still, the delivery driver chose to chase the Mustang, attracting the attention of the authorities in the process. The officer approached the van and asked the driver, “Is there a reason you’re going over 100?” She responded wryly, “I didn’t realize I was going that fast.”
The police officer then explained that he chose to pull her over instead of the Mustang. “I mean, that Mustang took off. He caught my attention and then you blew by him. I was pacing you at like 105 [mph]. He did the right thing and stopped. You continued.”
Understandably, the cop seemed perplexed with her reasoning for racing the Mustang in a mail truck. “Why’d you take off like that? Did you know the person in the Mustang?” Interestingly enough, she didn’t know the Mustang’s driver. Of course, if she were driving the Grumman LLV mail truck, she would have been hopeless to chase the Mustang. After all, the little LLV tops out at around 60 to 70 mph.
According to WRAL, she paid a $50 fine for the traffic violation. Not much of a consequence for traveling 40 mph over the posted speed limit. Especially in a driving-intensive job. It was hardly justifiable for a professional driver.
As you might expect, the internet was brimming with jokes after the incident. “‘Only 105, officer? I had this thing up to 130 delivering a package’,” a viewer joked. Other viewers were disturbed by the lack of ramifications. “50 bucks? Where I live, they would tow and impound the vehicle right on the spot.”
