The two argued, then the passenger decided to run the 74-year-old driver over several times with her own car.
Samuel Webster, a long-time resident of Phoenix, Arizona, spent his free time on retirement as an Uber driver to make money on the side. He recently turned 74-years-old. On Tuesday, January 22, he picked up 31-year-old Jordan Spalding.
Midway through the drive, Spalding and Webster reportedly got into an argument. Both got out of the car to continue the argument close to a canal, and it escalated quickly. Spalding climbed into Webster’s car, and she ran the driver over several times.
When police arrived on the scene, Webster was unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors say he succumbed to his injuries shortly after he arrived, reported 12 News.
Because he died after the fight, police are looking to charge her with second-degree murder.
Viewers think there’s a bigger problem surrounding the driver incident
Viewers were rightfully upset that an argument – which police are trying to determine the cause of – ended with the murder of an elderly man.
Some took it as a sign that something needed to change politically.
“This is what happens when the elderly have to work instead of retiring,” they wrote. “Politicians, please stop stealing money for yourself.”
Others hope it will put pressure on the company to help make being a driver safer.
“Jesus. This is another reason why it’s more dangerous to be a driver than a passenger. I always roll my eyes when I’m going to pick up a passenger and they demand I say their name and act all sketched out,” they wrote. “Drivers almost never do anything to passengers but every week I hear about something like this happening to another driver.”
Another said it was said that an argument ended with death.
“To take a life over an argument is just sad,” they said.
