He tried to lie and say he was reading text messages before crashing, but his body cam captured the “naked” truth.
Tristan Macomber, a Sheriff’s Deputy in Lake County, Florida resigned after he crashed into a woman’s SUV. She was stopped for a school bus with its stop sign out and flashing, and Macomber rear-ended her. As it turns out, Macomber was looking at his phone right before the collision.
His body camera footage, released by WESH, showed him tossing his phone onto the passenger’s seat before checking on the woman.
“I’m so sorry, Ma’am,” he was recorded saying. “Are you okay?” The woman was unharmed but was unhappy that her car was damaged by a distracted police officer.
The police investigation found out what Macomber was really doing
The crash initiated an internal investigation. Macomber initially told authorities that he was reading text messages from a group chat he was in with other deputies.
When they watched the body camera footage, however, it was revealed he was looking at pornography while driving. He later admitted he lied and that he was indeed looking at “pornographic material on his personal phone before the vehicle crash.”
Macomber resigned shortly after the investigation concluded, reported WSAV.
Viewers said he wrecked the cruiser and his career
Viewers of the body camera footage on YouTube (with the adult material blurred, of course) couldn’t help but make light of the situation.
However, some were concerned for Macomber’s health.
“If you’re unable to keep yourself from watching that stuff while you’re driving and your body camera on, you need professional assistance,” wrote a viewer.
Someone else said the truth might be infuriating for the woman in the SUV.
“Imagine being the victim and discovering the real reason a cop hit you,” their comment read.
Another saw the opportunity to make a clever joke.
“Just because you watched someone be hit from behind didn’t mean you needed to do it too, sir,” they wrote.
