New York, NY – A winter storm warning has been issued for parts of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont through Sunday afternoon. Heavy snowfall is expected to make travel hazardous across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will begin around 1 a.m. Sunday and will intensify by noon, with rates up to 1 inch per hour. The storm is expected to drop between 6 and 9 inches of snow before tapering off by 7 a.m. Monday. Areas affected include the Mid-Hudson Valley, the Eastern Catskills, the central and southern Taconics, and the Rensselaer Plateau.
Road conditions will deteriorate rapidly, especially on bridges and overpasses, which are likely to be slick and icy. Officials are urging caution for those who must travel and recommending emergency preparations. Drivers should keep essential items like torches, food and water in their vehicles.
Residents are also advised to be cautious on outdoor surfaces such as stairs and sidewalks, as they can be dangerously slippery.
