Just two days ago, Stray Rescue of St. Louis had been notified about a stray dog wandering through the outskirts of Perryville with a five-pound coil spring trap stuck on his rear right leg.
Footage from a Ring camera showed the dog dragging the spring trap hobbling down the road. Donna Lochmann and her team spent nearly a week driving around the area, but the dog didn’t want to be rescued. Every time any of the rescuers would approach, the dog would run away. He cleverly shied away from humane traps.
Persistence paid off, and Behrle was finally rescued. A veterinary examination showed not only did he have a five-pound coil spring trap (bear trap) painfully stuck to his leg, but he was also missing his front left foot from a previous injury. Fortunately, he was able to use his front leg with its single toe pad; dogs are tough – he had adapted.
His rear leg had to be amputated to avoid further pain and infection.
Today was the day for Behrle’s surgery. When sedated, a stick was found embedded in the roof of his mouth. How painful that had to be whenever he ate.
So not only has he lost a front foot, got his rear leg stuck in a coil spring trap, but he also had this lodged in his mouth! This poor baby really had a hard time out there, surviving on his own. He’s going to feel sooooo much better when he wakes up, free of pain. Eating is going to be a lot easier, too.
