Chicago, IL – A cold weather advisory is in effect for northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. The wind chill is expected to drop to 20 to 25 degrees below zero.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisory begins at 6 p.m. Sunday and continues until 1 a.m. Monday. Affected areas include Cook, Lake, DuPage and McHenry counties in Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. So little cold air can cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes.
Residents are urged to wear layered clothing, hats and gloves to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. Portable heaters should be used with caution and pets should be kept indoors to avoid accidents. The NWS warns that after a brief warm spell on Monday afternoon, wind chills will drop again Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The advisory also highlights risks for older adults and vulnerable populations. Checking on neighbors and friends during extreme cold is highly encouraged.
