At Lake Abanakee, located in Indian Lake, New York, a bull moose was rescued on Thursday after miscalculating the firmness of the ice on the lake and falling through.
Officers and rangers from the New York State Environmental Conservation responded to 911 calls reporting the moose struggling to survive in the frozen lake. A bystander had spotted the moose walk on the ice of the lake at midmorning, but moments later fell through about 200 yards from shore.
Officers arrived wearing cold weather waterproof gear and ventured out onto the ice. Forest Ranger Nahor used a chainsaw to cut a channel, while another officer, Lt. Higgins pushed the blocks of ice aside and under water. Two more officers joined in and continued to clear the icy path.
The moose was able to be guided to shore, and once he was in shallow water he ran onto the shore, shivered for awhile and rested there while he regained his strength. It took him multiple tries to get back on his feet, but eventually he ran back into the forest. It is estimated the moose had been in the freezing water for at least two hours.
