Heartbreaking: Sweet dog saved from hoarders buries her head into arms of rescuers craving comfort despite serious injuries

At the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, a two-year-old shepherd was seized from a hoarding situation in rural Missouri. The dog couldn’t walk, and when the person who found her took a closer look, she was horrified at the condition of the dog’s legs.

Her rescuers dubbed her Snow Drop; named after a beautiful winter flower.

Here’s her story so far. Snow Drop’s arrived at the rescue organization’s partner veterinary hospital with open wounds and exposed bone. Her legs were swollen and had been painfully scalded by urine extending to her paws and vagina. Her paws appeared as if they had been burned, and the infection had been ongoing and had spread to her joints.

It takes a long time for infection to attack the joints and bones like this. She’s been suffering for months, most likely. The smell of infection is so strong. She has no broken bones, so this either all started with a dog bite or pressure sores. Since she currently has pressure sores, that seems more likely and was probably kept in a crate or very small room.

Snow Drop is currently being administered fluids, antibiotics and a urinary catheter because she is not able to stand and she will never have to urinate all over herself again. She is also being treated for dehydration and her sodium levels are high. This condition is often caused by not being given water to drink.

There is no denying that Snow Drop is not only a survivor, but she’s as sweet as can be. Yesterday, while being treated for her painful injuries, she fought the sedation. Her veterinary staff said she just didn’t want to miss anything.

On the positive front, Snow Drop has feeling in her legs. And even when the staff cleans her wounds which is not a comfortable procedure for this sweet girl, she loves when touched.

She buries her head into our arms and chests, craving comfort, love and compassion.

If possible, Stray Rescue of St. Louis is asking for donations to cover medical care, surgeries, and healing journeys.
