An elderly man had been awakened by the sound of barking at 4:00 A.M. on Sunday during a brutal snowstorm in Kansas City. The man was shocked and heartbroken when he looked outside and saw a dog locked in a crate out on the sidewalk. The man immediately called Animal Services.
KC Pet Project humane officer, Angel answered the call and ventured out in the subfreezing temperatures and windy conditions to rescue a dog in need. Both gates to the shelter had been frozen shut, making it impossible to use one of the shelter’s vans, but the challenges made no difference to this brave officer. She jumped into her own vehicle and drove nearly an hour through difficult driving conditions to save a dog’s life.
When I got there, I could see her shivering, but when she saw me, her tail wagged so hard it shook the crate. I wrapped her in towels, cranked the heat in my car, and told her she was safe now.
As Angel drove back to the shelter, she called the man who reported the dog’s dire situation and told him she had rescued the dog. He expressed his gratitude and told the officer how he was convinced it had been divine intervention that woke him up, which ultimately saved the dog before she froze to death.
The dog is safe, warm and comfortable at the shelter.
Surely Angel lives up to her name. Despite her frozen fingers and toes and pure exhaustion working overtime helping out in the ferocious snowstorm…
This made it all worth it. We are essential workers. It doesn’t matter how tired or cold we are—we have to show up. I’m so proud to be part of this amazing team.
Angel’s story is just one example of the incredible commitment our Animal Services Division showed during the storm. Team members offered each other rides, picked up extra shifts, and even stayed overnight at the shelter to ensure no call went unanswered.
