During a tragic event that claimed the life of Deputy Jesus “Jesse” Vargas, Rocky, a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois K9, played a critical role in locating the suspect during a six-hour manhunt. Rocky courageously leaped into a dumpster where the suspect was hiding, despite the danger. The suspect fired upon Rocky, hitting him twice, but thanks to his backup, the suspect was neutralized.
United States Marshall K9 Rocky led police to the dumpster in the alleyway, after a nearly six hour search, where Vargas was killed. Rocky followed Davis’ scent which led the dog to the dumpster where the suspect allegedly shot the dog twice when police opened the dumpster prompting officials to return fire.
First responders could be overheard calling for emergency services for Rocky. The dog was transported to Westbury Animal Hospital in Southwest Houston by helicopter, where he received lifesaving care. Westbury Animal Hospital – Compassionate Care and Commitment were able to stabilize him and save his life. His condition continues to be stable, and he is expected to survive his injuries.
And although the world has tragically lost one hero – Deputy Vargas, another hero was saved.
Deputy Vargas leaves behind a wife and three children.
Records show Davis had a criminal history.
