Central Illinois – Central Illinois residents are preparing for dangerously cold temperatures on Monday, with wind chills expected to reach minus 20 degrees.
The National Weather Service has issued a windchill advisory for the area, warning of the risk of frostbite within minutes of exposure. According to meteorologists, temperatures are expected to remain well below zero throughout the day, with winds reaching up to 20 mph. The combination of wind and sub-zero temperatures would pose a threat to life.
Local officials have urged residents to limit time outside and to bundle up if they go out. In these extreme conditions frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes. Officials recommend wearing multiple layers, a hat, gloves and insulated shoes.
Emergency shelters and warming centers are opening across the region to assist those without adequate heating. Community leaders stress the importance of checking on elderly neighbors, pets and people who don’t have access to heat.
Meteorologists predict that the extreme cold will subside slightly by Tuesday, but temperatures will remain below average.
