WPBN: After allegedly driving through a Florida cemetery and seriously damaging multiple headstones, an 18-year-old male was taken into custody.
Due to the extent of the property damage and the type of vandalism, the incident, which happened early on Wednesday morning, has received a lot of attention.
Shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the vehicle reportedly crashed through the Greenwood Cemetery, according to the Wildwood Police Department.
According to witnesses and preliminary accounts, a car sped through the cemetery, hitting several tombstones and leaving a path of devastation in its wake. In addition to causing damage to the headstones, the act violated the site’s sanctity, which is where many families bury their loved ones.
There was no immediate sign of the driver’s identify as they left the area in a dark SUV after causing the damage. However, at the cemetery, authorities found pieces of the car that were crucial to the case.
Additionally, local security footage was crucial in assisting law police in locating the perpetrator and the car in question.
“I got a message from my friend, and I rushed here because my friend said, ‘Someone has damaged the graveyard, and I believe your grandmother was one of the headstones that got hit,’” Jonie Taylor stated. “I was heartbroken. I was pissed more than anything.”
The SUV and its driver were identified and found by detectives at a residence about two miles from Greenwood Cemetery. The suspect was apprehended and placed under arrest with the use of the evidence and camera footage.
In connection with the incident, the defendant is currently facing several accusations. Given the grave repercussions of his conduct, he has been charged with fleeing the scene of a collision and causing property damage.
Authorities disclosed that the suspect would also be charged with three counts of criminal mischief for unrelated property damage incidents at a construction site.
According to reports, these occurrences happened in October and December, suggesting a pattern of disruptive activity.

Deborah Lochrie, whose loved ones are buried in the cemetery, told, “I just hope whoever did this really regrets what they did, changes their ways, and comes out here and makes it right. I just can’t believe what went on.”
