Signing on for privacy
Milpitas residents started the new year with a new tool to protect their privacy and property rights. The City of Milpitas enacted a new law prohibiting unwanted visitors from intruding upon residential property in violation of properly posted signs. Property owners can legally place signs on their premises to prohibit unwanted visitors, including solicitors, canvassers and other uninvited guests.
Signs must be prominently displayed at entry points to be legally binding, and must clearly state “No soliciting,” “No trespassing,” “No canvassing” or other similar language to indicate that visitors are not welcome without prior permission.
Under the new law, residents can sue trespassers for violating posted signs. Even without a sign, uninvited visitors must follow a resident’s order to leave their property. Organizations are responsible for informing those going door to door on their behalf about this new law, aka title V, chapter 15 of the Milpitas municipal code.
Library play spaces
The Santa Clara County Library District is creating interactive children’s spaces in all of its libraries, including the Milpitas branch. Storybook SCCLD play spaces are designed to promote the five early learning principles of Every Child Ready to Read: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.
The first play space is due to be installed at the Saratoga Library on Jan. 20, with installation at the Milpitas Library set for March 26-June 14. To keep patrons safe during construction, the children’s room will be closed to the public during installation at each library. Children’s materials will be made available in other parts of the library.
