WPBN: On Friday, the Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, revealed that almost $5 billion in funding would be awarded to over 560 projects throughout all fifty states.
Funding for transportation infrastructure comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which was passed by the administration of Vice President Joe Biden.
“When President Biden took office four years ago, he immediately faced some of the most profound and wide-ranging transportation crises in the modern era,” Buttigieg stated. “Through his leadership, this administration passed a sweeping investment in our nation’s infrastructure unlike anything since the Eisenhower years — and did so with the support of both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.”
He stated that the projects will “further modernize our roads and rails, build out a national EV charger network, and ensure that transportation in the 21st century lives up to its basic promise and connects more communities across our nation.”
A significant allocation of $1.1 billion has been made available as part of the most recent financial initiatives. This allocation is intended to enhance both safety and efficiency at 123 highway-rail and pathway-rail grade crossings.
At intersections where roads and trains converge, these initiatives are intended to improve safety, hence lowering the likelihood of accidents and minimizing the amount of time that delays occur.
Moreover, 109 essential surface transportation projects, which will concentrate on enhancing the overall functionality and dependability of the nation’s transportation network, have been allocated a total of $1.3 billion in funding.
To provide additional assistance to rural towns, a budget of 785 million dollars has been allotted for the purpose of enhancing and expanding the surface transportation infrastructure in these regions.
The provision of this financing will assist in addressing long-standing challenges to the infrastructure and will guarantee that rural areas are provided with transportation systems that are both contemporary and dependable.
Six hundred and thirty-five million dollars have been allocated to 49 projects that have the objective of expanding zero-emission electric vehicle charging and refueling infrastructure across the country.
This is part of an effort to promote sustainability. The transition to cleaner energy and the reduction of carbon emissions in the transportation sector are both goals that would be accomplished through the implementation of these projects.

In addition, 81 projects across 31 states have been given a total of $544 million in order to reunite areas that have been historically split or cut off as a result of decisions made in the past regarding transportation infrastructure. This will serve to promote equity and accessibility.
The financing for airport infrastructure and systems projects will amount to $332 million, which will be used to support 171 projects that aim to upgrade facilities, improve operations, and enhance safety for air travelers.
In addition, a total of 146 million dollars will be allocated to six intercity passenger train service routes across the country. The purpose of this investment is to enhance these routes and improve the dependability and efficiency of rail services.

For the purpose of resolving past imbalances in the nation’s transportation networks, this comprehensive investment in transportation infrastructure represents a commitment to increasing safety, strengthening connectivity, promoting sustainability, and advancing sustainability.
“To date across the Biden-Harris Administration, $591 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding has been announced for over 72,000 projects and awards in all 50 states, D.C., and U.S. territories,” according to the department.
