WPBN: Just a few weeks after suffering a shark attack that resulted in the loss of a portion of his right leg, a surfer in Hawaii who is 61 years old wants to get back into the sea.
in Friday, November 1, Kenji Nonaka was surfing at the “Sand Piles” in Waiehu Beach Park when he was bitten on the leg by a shark, as stated in a news statement that was issued by officials from the County of Maui Police and Fire Department.
As a result of the attack, his right leg was “completely severed just below the knee,” which prevented him from participating in his daily surfing sessions, which he had been doing for more than three decades, according to a GoFundMe campaign that was started to gather money for his recuperation.
On November 7, an update revealed that he had been discharged from the hospital and was “extremely motivated to start the rehabilitation and recovery process in order to get back into the ocean that he loves.” This information was provided on the campaign website.
It was stated that Nonaska had all of his staples removed two weeks later, that he was performing “one-legged exercises,” and that he was “making great progress in his recovery.”
In the time since it was established, the GoFundMe campaign has successfully raised more than $107,000, surpassing its intended target of $100,000.
During the course of his ongoing recovery process, Nonaka stated that he is “so happy” to report that he has gone surfing ten times. This statement was made in an interview with KITV that was released on Monday, January 6.
The words “water is not scared, just make me happy,” were spoken by Nonaka. “But sometimes I little bit scared of the shark because sometimes a big fish jumps… but I still respect them.”
According to him, he finally got back into the ocean on December 21. He also mentioned that he now surfs while lying down and occasionally on his knees.

As for the question of when he will be getting a prosthetic leg, which was something that was addressed in the most recent post on the GoFundMe page, Nonaska told that he and his wife are heading to Oahu this week in order to seek for one.
The statement was made by Nonaska. “So many people supported me and helped me,” she said. “I so happy, I just appreciate them.”
