JetBlue passenger opens door during taxi at Boston airport, detained

A JetBlue Airways passenger caused a scare at Boston’s Logan International Airport on Tuesday evening by opening an emergency exit door while the aircraft was taxiing, triggering the deployment of the evacuation slide. The event occurred on January 7, 2025, aboard JetBlue Flight 161, scheduled to depart for San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The emergency exit over the wing was opened at approximately 7:25 p.m., as the Airbus aircraft prepared for departure. Despite the alarming situation, the passenger responsible for the incident remained onboard.

Detained without injury

Massachusetts State Police confirmed the passenger was detained at Terminal C after reports of a disturbance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. Authorities have not disclosed the motive for the incident.

JetBlue responds to the incident

In a statement to NBC News, a JetBlue spokesperson confirmed that the emergency exit was opened “for unknown reasons” and reiterated that the airline’s priority was ensuring the safety and security of its passengers. They added that efforts were underway to minimize delays and ensure passengers could continue their journey as quickly as possible.

Flight delays

While the activation of the emergency slide delayed the flight, JetBlue assured customers that alternative arrangements were being made to resume travel promptly. The incident highlights the importance of passenger awareness and safety protocols during flights, particularly in emergencies or security-related situations. Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the event.
