Wyoming Highways Paralyzed by Monster Blizzard: Are You Safe?

Blizzard Conditions Persist in Wyoming: Highways Closed Statewide

Wyoming remains gripped by severe winter weather as a powerful blizzard continues to blanket the state with heavy snowfall and high winds. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has announced the closure of numerous highways, including extensive stretches of Interstates 80 and 90, leaving motorists stranded and travel plans disrupted.

Road Closures and Travel Advisories

The blizzard has created hazardous driving conditions, with near-zero visibility and snow drifts rendering many roads impassable. WYDOT has issued a travel advisory strongly urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Emergency services are on high alert, responding to multiple incidents of vehicles stuck in the snow.

“This is one of the most severe winter storms we’ve seen in years,” said a WYDOT spokesperson. “We’re working around the clock to clear roads, but conditions are changing rapidly, and safety is our top priority.”

Impact Across the State

The storm has caused widespread disruptions, with schools and businesses across Wyoming closing their doors. Power outages have been reported in several areas as high winds topple trees and power lines. Residents have been advised to prepare for potential extended outages by stocking up on essential supplies.

Cheyenne, the state capital, experienced additional snowfall overnight, and temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing for the next several days. In Casper, residents woke up to drifts over three feet high, making even short trips outside a challenge.

Weather Forecast

The National Weather Service predicts that blizzard conditions will persist through much of the week, with snowfall tapering off by midweek. However, sub-zero temperatures and gusty winds will continue, posing risks of frostbite and hypothermia.

Stay Safe and Stay Informed

Authorities are urging everyone to:

  • Stay indoors and avoid travel.
  • Keep updated on weather and road conditions via official channels.
  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with mobility issues.

For real-time updates on road conditions, visit the WYDOT website or call 511.
