Greenup, IL – A multi-vehicle crash has closed Interstate 70 in both directions near Greenup, causing major traffic delays.
According to Illinois State Police (ISP), the accident occurred early Sunday morning near milepost 124. Eastbound and westbound lanes are closed, and traffic is being rerouted onto U.S. Route 40. Officials have warned drivers to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) confirmed on social media that the closure could last for several hours. Motorists traveling through the area are urged to plan alternate routes and use caution.
ISP Troop 9 units remain on scene, investigating the cause of the crash and coordinating traffic management. At present there is no information about anyone being injured.
Drivers using Route 40 should be aware of increased congestion as detours are in place. Officials remind travelers to stay updated on road conditions by checking IDOT’s website or social media channels.
