JEFFERSON CITY, MO – A powerful winter storm swept through Missouri on Sunday, stranding thousands of drivers and creating dangerous road conditions. Icy highways and near-zero visibility led to several accidents and traffic jams.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to 2,084 calls for service as of Sunday evening. They assisted 1,043 stranded motorists and documented 356 accidents across the state. At least 31 people were injured, and one death was reported.
Missouri National Guard personnel were deployed to assist law enforcement in rescue operations. Authorities urged drivers to stay home as conditions worsened Sunday night, with plunging temperatures and icy winds making travel nearly impossible.
Interstate closures and stranded semis were reported near major cities, including St. Louis and Kansas City. Residents suffered power outages and delays as emergency crews struggled to clear icy roads.
State officials advised drivers to pack emergency supplies and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation improves. Forecasters expect the storm to subside on Monday, but black ice remains a major concern.
