LOUISVILLE, KY – Residents across south-central Kentucky are facing hazardous conditions as a major winter storm continues to dump freezing rain, sleet and snow through Monday evening. Winter storm warnings remain in effect, with the potential for dangerous snow accumulations to cause travel disruptions and sporadic power outages.
Freezing rain will intensify tonight, changing to sleet and snow by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A total of up to an inch of snow is expected with an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow expected. Roads, including major routes such as I-65 and I-64, are expected to become hazardous, with reduced visibility and ice likely to impact bridges and overpasses.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable. Officials recommend preparing for power outages by charging devices, stocking up with flashlights and having extra blankets on hand.
Monday’s forecast includes lingering snow showers with a high near 30 degrees and gusts up to 25 mph. Conditions will gradually improve on Monday night as the sky clears and the temperature drops to 15 degrees. However, cold on the roads remains a concern.
The extended outlook brings calm but cool weather, with highs near 24 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits, further complicating recovery efforts.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and road conditions throughout the week. Check local forecasts frequently, and avoid walking or driving on snow-covered surfaces when possible.
