WICHITA, KS – Bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously cold winds are expected to dominate Wichita through Monday morning, posing a risk to residents and travelers. The National Weather Service forecasts wind temperatures as low as -14 degrees, making frostbite a serious concern for exposed skin.
According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature on Monday will be near 16 degrees and north-northwesterly winds will be 10 to 20 mph. Winds gusting up to 36 mph will add to the cold, making it feel even colder. Residents are urged to avoid gatherings together, limit outdoor exposure and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
There will be some relief on Tuesday as it will be mostly sunny and the maximum temperature will reach 21 degrees, but the minimum temperature will drop to 4 degrees at night. There will be some heat on Wednesday, the maximum temperature will be around 22 degrees and the sky is expected to remain clear throughout the night. By Thursday, a slight warming trend will begin, with high temperatures reaching the low 30s by Friday.
Drivers should be cautious during the morning commute, as frost and possible icy patches may form on the roads. Those traveling on I-35 or I-135 should closely monitor weather conditions and allow extra time.
